Cube World Set

Cube World SetThe things those kids are doing today, sheesh! These little cube stick figures have quite the little lives going on for themselves. The fellow in the blue box is Chief, and the one in the red box is Sparky. Chief is a policeman and Sparky is a fireman. Each stick figure goes about their own business and have some games you can play with them. I suppose that’s what the buttons on the front are for. One cool thing is that if you shake the cube, the little dude falls down, neat!

Now it gets much better. You can connect the two cubes and the two guys will interact with each other! As you can see there in the picture, they like to play pranks on one another. There are two other cube people you can get as well – Toner, a corporate desk jockey, and Dash, a delivery man. Apparently if you have all four connected, they will all interact with each other in a glorious meeting of stick figures. Crazy stuff.

Aquapict LED Jellyfish Aquarium by Banpresto

Aquapict LED Jellyfish Aquarium by BanprestoI’ve always had a hard time keeping fish alive in aquariums. It doesn’t matter what type of fish, or what type of aquarium, I just know they aren’t going to last. This seems like a pretty good aquarium for somebody like me. I’m also pretty sure that jellyfish aren’t exactly something you can buy at the pet store and keep alive with jellyfish food, whatever that may be.

This aquarium has multi-colored LEDs to light up three little jellyfish made of silicone. That means I wouldn’t have to worry about maintaining their life! The jellyfish are constructed with the silicone to allow them to move around just like living jellyfish. There are 12 color settings. The movement of the jellyfish, or I guess jellyfishes, would be very soothing to observe.

Now, this is so cutting-edge, that the product is only available in Japan. That’s where the internet comes in handy. Us Americans can order it and they’ll ship a voltage converting along with it for no extra charge. So when you give it as a gift (or keep it for yourself), make sure you have that part handy.

Segatoys HomeStar Pure Home Planetarium

Segatoys HomeStar Pure Home PlanetariumThis is one I really want to see in action. It brings the night time sky into your house. I was recently able to get away from the city lights and look up at the night stars at Lake Powell. I tell you what, it was awesome.

The Home Planetarium projects 10,000 stars onto the ceiling. This model is powered by 4 AA batteries, so you can put it anywhere in the room you like, no need to worry about a cord. Different plates are available to include the moon or change the stars to the southern skies.

Some of the best campfire conversations I’ve had have happened when looking up at the stars. If you can’t get out to the wilderness, bring it to your home!

Geek Work Shirt

Geek Work ShirtOh boy, this is great. Most geeks are usually seen either in a Star Wars t-shirt or something that seems to take away from society’s view upon them as a man. On the other hand, whenever you see a guy in a gray-blue button up shirt with a name embroidered into it, most of us think “Now there’s a hard working man.” Well, here is the solution to that dilemma for the geek.

It’s the Geek Work Shirt. Only the hard core geeks really know what it’s like under the case of a beast of a computer, just like a garage mechanic knows what it’s like under the chassis of a ’57 Chevy. So get the geek you love a shirt that will earn him some respect for the work he really does. Also, take a minute to read the description of the product at ThinkGeek, it blows mine away.

Fluffy Acrylic Laptop Sleeve by Foofbag

Fluffy Acrylic Laptop Sleeve by FoofbagSleek and weird all at once. The fluffy acrylic laptop sleeve is a pretty weird looking piece of handiwork. This is another wysiwyg (that’s a web designer acronym for what-you-see-is-what-you-get) product. But what you don’t see is the good feeling the owner of this sleeve will get deep down inside when their arm gets a nice tingly massage from all the small tentacles protruding from their laptop cover.

Possibly the best part about these are the names of the three color options. They are as follows:

Choose from Purple People Eater (purple fabric with black tufts), Inverted Urchin (blue fabric with pink tufts) or Flaming Madness (red fabric with yellow tufts).

I love it. The Inverted Urchin is really unbeatable. I think it’s my least favorite of the three color options, but the name is just so good. I’d probably get the Purple People Eater and tell people it’s called the Inverted Urchin. Reminds me of my last trip to a tide pool. Neato!

Bluetooth Retro Handset at ThinkGeek

Here’s a gift that I have received before, and I must tell you, it was one of the greatest gifts I’ve got in a good while. It’s a Bluetooth handset that looks like a toy. It’s a great way to make people think you have finally gone off the deep end.

The one I have is the corded version, which you can get here. That one comes with different connections for specific cell phones. It’s a great move to walk into a room while actually having a conversation on this thing. People will look a little weird at you at first, then give a courtesy laugh, thinking you are just using a toy a little too convincingly. Then comes the fun part. Tell whoever you’re talking to to hold on, then hand the handset to the unsuspecting observer. Chances are they’ll at least try to make you feel good by going along with it, then when they hear someone respond to them, sit back and enjoy the shock in their eyes.

I don’t have a Bluetooth cell phone, but I can imagine it’s even more shocking when there is no chord attached. I think this is a great gift idea for that special someone who feels they must always have that earpiece clinging to the side of their head, whether they’re using it or not.

Kick it old school here.

Airswitch TC

Airswitch TCThere are all kinds of lamps and lights out there. Most have a switch of some sort, some are activated by touch alone, and some are turned on and off when you clap. This one presents a new way to control the light.

All you have to do to turn the Airswitch on and off is wave your hand over it! Not only can you turn it on and off, you can adjust its brightness by moving your hand higher or lower above the thing. Pretty awesome. It reminds me of a theremin, which is a musical instrument played by moving your hands in the proximity of the thing.

The light is available in four colors: red, blue, green, or orange. It’s 9½” tall, is made of glass, and uses a 40 watt bulb. This is apparently just another piece of evidence showing that I must have some weird obsession with lighting. Maybe it’s just that there are so many weird and unique types of lighting out there.

Wave your hand to make this gift show up here.

Wooden USB Memory Stick by Oooms

Wooden USB Memory Stick by OoomsThese things look pretty awesome in action. There’s nothing quite like the sight of a little hunk of real wood sticking out of the back or side of a computer. Each one of these USB flash memory sticks is a one of a kind real piece of wood.

It’s a great mix of technology with back woods style. Passers by may think that someone walked by with a stick and crammed it into the side of your laptop. They have 1 gigabyte of storage, so they’re decent sized drives. Just enough to transfer those work documents and maybe a few songs between the home and office.

I’m not sure if these come with a cap for the USB connector. Either way, if they do or not, the recipient of this one-of-a-kind gift idea may want to be careful about leaving this lying around where trash may be picked up. There is an extension USB cord that can be purchased at the site at well. Imagine how crazy someone would look with a cord leading from their computer to a little stick. I love it!

Stick it to technology here.

Set Your Computer Ablaze with Memlite

MemliteIf you’re like me, many times you’ve found yourself saying “If only there was something that let me set fire to things and store my files at the same time.” Doesn’t sound like something you’ve said? Well maybe someone you know wishes for just that. If so, this is the perfect weird and unique gift idea!

So what is this thing? Well, it’s a lighter/USB drive combo. It’s a swell idea I suppose. I imagine it would mostly come in handy for those who tend to prefer the smoke inhalation, but hey, who doesn’t like setting things on fire?

The Memlite comes in six colors (at the time of posting, I imagine there may be more later on), and four different sizes, from 512 mb to 4 gb. I’m not sure how that’s possible, since the picture makes the USB part look pretty small, but all I know is that the largest one is 4 gb, which is pretty sweet.

Warning: The site has some somewhat loud music, but it can be turned off. The place to turn it off is near the bottom right of the image; it’s the little vertical bars moving up and down. Also, I’ve managed to have the page freak out on me and just keep loading, blasting the music. If that happens, close the window and try again. So go look at the Memlite.

iPod Smart Case by SFBags

iPod Smart CaseI recently received an iPod Classic as a gift (awesome), but I don’t have a case for it at the moment. There are a lot to choose from out there, and I think I found a pretty good one here.

The Smart Case claims to be high-impact, looks sleek, and it doesn’t take up much extra space, so your iPod is still nice and portable. The case comes in sizes for all current iPods: Classic, Touch, and Nano. It comes in your choice of 6 colors, I think I like the awesome brown (I like traditionally “ugly” colors, I’m weird).

Check it out here.
